The class allows for and encourages interaction between the children and the seniors. With rhythm instruments, songs, play materials and movement, we create a rich musical experience for everyone.

Brookline Music School’s Term II (Spring) programs begin January 31, 2012, offering a variety of classes and private instruction for all ages and abilities. Programs offered include early childhood music and movement and dance classes, including Pre-Ballet and Ballet, Creative Dance, Sibling Dance, and Dance Ensembles for boys and girls. Group classes include Music for Little Mozarts, Beginning Piano, Music Technology, Group Voice, Composition, ipad Band, Theory and Ear Training, Garage Band, Jazz Theory, and Songwriting, as well as Jazz/Rock/Pop, Chamber and Flute Choir ensembles for kids, teens and adults. Suzuki instruction offers flute and violin groups, as well as private lessons.

Private lessons are the cornerstone of music education. Brookline Music School welcomes students ages 4 years to adult, with the belief that the right match of student and teacher is vital to a student’s progress, pleasure of learning and enjoyment of music. Private tuition includes weekly private lessons: 16-weeks in Term I (Fall), and 15-weeks plus a 60-minute workshop in Term II (Spring), multiple student recitals and concerts, workshops and master classes.

Brooklyn-based trio Rolie Polie Guacamole is a children's jam band who love to sing about nutritious foods like hummus, guacamole, apples and açaí berries. Their songs are original and parents like the positive influence their songs have about healthy eating and staying active. Songs like "Wake Up Shake Up," "Red Light Green Light" and "Swim Like the Dolphin" have kids dancing and following along to movement instructions during the show. Not all their songs are about food, some are just silly, fun and inspirational songs that remind children to "Always Brush Your Teeth."

Brookline Music School (BMS) presents An Evening of Piano Trios with Susan Jensen on violin, Darry Dolezal on cello and Paul Jacobs on piano. The concert will present Beethovan’s Allegretto Wo0 39, Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 1, and Martin Boykan’s Piano Trio No. 3 "Rites of Passage" inspired by artwork of Susan Schwalb.

An Evening of Piano Trios is one of Brookline Music School’s yearly faculty concerts, performed and presented by BMS piano faculty Paul Jacobs. BMS’ renowned faculty offers an array of unique and educational concerts throughout the year at the Kennard House and at numerous community locations. The superb quality of educational offerings at BMS is made possible by the high level of arts education, musicianship and pedagogical experience of the faculty, with over half of its internationally trained faculty members holding a Masters degree or higher.

Doug Johnson is an Associate Professor of Piano at Berklee College of Music and a faculty member at Wellesley College. Doug performs locally and internationally. He has toured with extensively in Austria and Poland with his trio, the Doug Johnson Trio, and with the Grace Kelly Quintet and the Grace Kelly Quintet with Phil Woods. Doug has performed throughout Europe and the U.S.; including performances at the Jazz Standard (N.Y.); in Vienna, Warsaw, London, Paris, Madrid, Cohenhagen, Berlin. Festivals include Montreal, Toronto, Tanglewood, Oslo, Boston, Warsaw and Newport.

As an educator Doug specializes in rhythmic studies, Brazilian music, piano technique. Doug has done work with the Alexander Technique and Body Mapping and these concepts inform the work he does with students.

American pianist Victor Rosenbaum has performed widely as soloist and chamber music performer in the United States, Europe, Asia, Israel, and Russia in such prestigious halls as Tully Hall in New York and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. Described by the Boston Globe as “one of those artists who make up for all the drudgery the habitual concertgoer endures in the hopes of finding the real, right thing,” he has collaborated with such artists as Leonard Rose, Paul Katz, Arnold Steinhardt, Robert Mann, Joseph Silverstein, Malcolm Lowe, and the Brentano, Borromeo, and Cleveland String Quartets, among others.

A renowned teacher, Rosenbaum has given master classes at London’s Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School, the conservatories of St. Petersburg and Moscow, and such other institutions as the Menuhin School, the Toho School in Tokyo and the Jerusalem Music Center. He was Visiting Professor of Piano at the Eastman School, a guest teacher at Juilliard, and gives lectures, workshops, and master classes for teachers’ groups and schools both in the U. S. and abroad. He is on the faculty of the Mannes College of Music in New York, the New England Conservatory, where he formerly chaired the piano department, and was Director and President from of the Longy School of Music from 1985-2001.

Championing Chamber Music

The Dynamic Duos Plus Recital on Sunday, February 13 was exciting and inspirational. Last year, the nascent Dynamic Duos concert (an idea first brought forward by Michelle Rush, Coordinator of Strings) had just a handful of student participants. This year, over 80 students participated in three full recitals of duo and occasional trio collaborations. If that was not enough excitement, Karen Robbins, Coordinator of Chamber Music, has rekindled ensemble playing at BMS and presented a recital featuring five groups, one of which was a wind group that included 15 performers. Though to a large extent, these student collaborations are still occasional, it is a terrific starting point for building student and parent excitement about students making music together on a regular basis and in a more structured, recurring and thriving chamber music program.

Brookline Music School presents The Second Annual Winsor Music Halloween Concert, featuring Brookline Music School faculty, Megan Henderson on piano, Winsor Music Artistic Director, Peggy Pearson on oboe and Dalit Warshaw on theremin, playing classical pieces arranged for piano and theremin. The theremin, an early electronic musical instrument, has often been associated with an eerie sound, which has led to its use in movie soundtracks, as well as rock and avant-garde, 20th- and 21st-century concert music.

Audience members will have a chance to play the theremin and sing a Halloween tune or two. The Bakalar Recital Hall will be adorned in Halloween spectacle, as well as the players. Come in costume and join the party!

Winners of the Halloween Story Contest will have their story read and accompanied by theremin and piano at the Halloween Concert.

Brookline Music School will hold a Halloween Story Contest for ages 14 years and under. Stories and poems can be any length. All entries are due by Monday, October 25. Winners of the Halloween Story Contest will have their story read and accompanied by theremin and piano at the Halloween Concert. Entries can be sent to info@bmsmusic.org.

The concert is free and all ages are welcome. Come in costume and join the party!

SANYO XACTI SOUND RECORDER XPS01

There is a great new recording device made by Sanyo that has just come out. It’s called the Xacti Sound Recorder XPS01. The device is small, about the size of an MP3 player. It has 2 stereo microphones built in, has an LCD screen and a touch panel with the controls, records to a micro SD card and is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. It can be used for voice and instrumental music recording and can also be used to record music off of the built in FM radio.

Options abound with this unit! There are 6 settings for microphone recording: Interview, Meeting/Lecture, Music, Headphone (you can record to music already recorded on the unit), Portable (connect to the line out terminal of a portable recording device), or Component (connect to the line out terminal of a component stereo system).

After selecting a scene, there are 6 recording mode options to choose from. The CD quality wave file (PCM44.1kHz), used for music recording, will give you approximately 3 hours of recording time using a 2GB memory card, or you can select from 5 MP3 settings for up to 136 hours of recording time.

The unit comes with 7 preset recording EQ modes: Flat, Super Bass, Bass, Middle, Bass and Treble, Treble, and Super Treble, and if the presets don’t give you the sound you want, you can customize the 5 bands of the recording EQ mode by selecting User as the recording EQ mode. There is a Peak Limiter setting that can be used to adjust for any sudden, excessive input that allows you to suppress any sound distortion while recording, and there is also the option to connect to an external microphone. So no matter what instrument you are recording, it is nearly impossible not to get the type of sound that you are looking for.

After recording, you can transfer files or folders to your computer, so there aren’t too many things that Sanyo hasn’t considered. It’s easy to use, and is very reasonably priced, around $199 for the recording device. A docking unit that can be used to recharge the unit and that includes speakers for playback can be purchased for an additional $50.

BMS POP/JAZZ WOMEN'S VOCAL ENSEMBLE
13-18 years

This women's ensemble will focus on unaccompanied small group singing in a wide variety of musical styles, ranging from classical to folk to current and classic pop music, as well as jazz and world music. In addition to learning how to blend in an ensemble, improve reading skills, and sing in a wide variety of genres, there will also be the opportunity for students to arrange music and assistant direct, if desired. One public performance per semester.

A placement interview is required.

This women's ensemble will focus on Classical and World music (i.e. Balkan, Georgian and South African music). Singing in a topnotch ensemble is one of the most rewarding musical experiences you can have. We welcome all experienced and enthusiastic singers to join us in this exciting new adventure. Reading music is not essential, as we will also cover basic reading skills. A placement interview is required.

Our first performance will be on the Winsor Chamber Music Series in November of 2010. There will be many more performance opportunities throughout the year.

BMS Faculty Plays Star Spangled Banner at the Fenway Naturalization Ceremony

Brookline Music School Trumpet Faculty Tom Halter played the U.S. National Anthem at the Fenway Naturalization Ceremony on Tuesday, September 14, 2010.

Officials declared the Sept. 14th ceremony at Fenway Park to be one of the largest naturalization ceremonies in U.S. history and the largest in MA,with a record of 5,189 immigrants from 151 nations from Afghanistan to the United Kingdom, who became U.S. citizens.

The last time the oath of citizenship was administered at Fenway Park was in 2008, when more than 3,000 people from 140 countries took part in the ceremony.
